The Internet allows us to communicate and share information with groups distributed around the world in a wide variety of ways. Here we explore the most common social media sites. You will learn to create accounts and use the sites effectively.

Social Media: Overview – What are they and why would I use them?

  • Description: We will discuss Social Media and how to get started with some of the better known sites, including Facebook and Twitter. We will provide an overview of how they work and discuss why and how you would use them.
  • Audience: Comfortable with a computer and want to socialize on the Internet.
  • Duration: 1 hour in total

Introduction to Facebook

  • Description: This session will cover how to create a Facebook profile as well as how to use and maintain your page. There will be an overview of Facebook features and you will gain an understanding its privacy settings. Using chat and messenger, creating groups and restricting content sharing policies will be discussed. Also, bring some ideas of text and images you want to add to your profile. We will be using Facebook through the web application – the Facebook app on touch devices is a separate course.
  • Audience: Your friends want you to be Friends!
  • Duration: 4 hours in total

Facebook on Phones and Tablets

  • Description: The Facebook app on phones and tablets is structured a bit differently than the web application. This session will cover how to use Facebook on a touch device, from creating a Facebook profile to using and maintaining your page. There will be an overview of Facebook features and you will gain an understanding its privacy settings. Using chat and messenger apps, creating groups and restricting content sharing policies will be discussed. Also, bring some ideas of text and images you want to add to your profile. We will be using Facebook through the app on your tablet or phone.

Pictures and Videos in Facebook

  • Description: Facebook allows you to share pictures and videos with family and friends. We will explore:
    • uploading and downloading media,
    • organizing albums,
    • editing images, and
    • sharing.
  • Audience: You want to share media through Facebook.
  • Duration: 4 hours in total

Introduction to Twitter

  • Description: Twitter limits posts to 140 characters – we will learn to communicate with others using this very effective medium. Discussion and hands on exercises to create your own user id (handle), how to communicate to the general public or just your trusted friends (followers). We will cover the language of Twitter, for example: followers, hashtag, mentions, trending topic, etc.
  • Audience: Communicate within 140 characters.
  • Duration: 4 hours in total

Introduction to Skype

  • Description: Enjoy visual communication with family and friends over long distances for free on your laptop or other mobile devices. There will be instruction and hands on exercises so you can sign up for Skype and set up your profile. You will be able to add contacts, make video calls,  use instant messaging and even share your screen with Skype.
  • Audience: You want to video conference around the world for free.
  • Duration: 4 hours in total
